Two Planters products were recalled due to a potentially fatal listeria contamination.
Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts and Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts produced at one of the company's facilities were contaminated before being distributed to Publix warehouses in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree warehouses in Georgia in South Carolina, its parent company, Hormel Foods Sales LLC, announced in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration notice issued last Friday (May 3).
"Hormel Foods Sales, LLC is voluntarily recalling a limited number of two PLANTERS® products that were produced at one of its facilities in April," the recall states. "This recall only impacts two retailers in five states. These products are being recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes."
The product recall includes 4-ounce packages of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts (UPC 2900002097) with a "best if used by" date of April 11, 2025, and 8.75-ounce cans of Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts (UPC 2900001621) with a "best if used by" date of April 25, 2026. Listeria symptoms commonly include fever and muscle aches, as well as cases of diarrhea or other gastrointestinal issues, headache, confusion and/or convulsions.
An estimated 1,600 cases of listeriosis are caused by the Listeria monocytogene in the United States annually, which includes an estimated death toll of 260 patients per year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Elderly people, pregnant women, infants and adults with compromised immune systems typically experience the most severe symptoms of Listeria.
